Barong Dance.
Barong is probably the most well known dance in Bali. It is a story telling dance, narrating the fight between good and evil. This dance is the classic example of the Balinese way of acting out mythology, resulting in myth and history being blended into one reality.
The story goes that Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was condemned by Erlangga's father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle, the monsters and demons, to come after Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were so strong that Erlangga had to ask for help. Barong came with Erlangga's soldiers, and a battle ensued. Rangda cast a spell that made Erlangga's soldiers all want to kill themselves by pointing their poisoned keris into their own stomachs and chests. Barong cast a spell that made their bodies resistant to the sharp keris. In the end, Barong won and Rangda ran away.
It is said that the players could die or get seriously injured in a Barong dance if Rangda's spell is too strong. A player, acting the role of a weak soldier may not be able to resist it, even with the help of Barong and may end up hurting himself with his own keris.
The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred items and before each dance a priest must be present to offer blessings by sprinkling them with holy water taken from Mount Agung and offerings are presented.

Kintamani / Gunung Batur / Lake Bedugul
The mountainous region around Kintamani, centering on the spectacular volcanic caldera of Mount Batur with its deep crater lake and bubbling hot springs, is rugged with a high and wild beauty.
Wonderful mountain air and dizzying views in all directions are what makes Kintamani one of the most memorable stops on the Bali tourist itinerary. In addition there are many temples to be visited.
Mount Batur is only a small volcano, but its setting is in the heart of a huge crater- 14km in diameter. Adjacent to the volcano is the large crescent-shaped Lake Batur and it is surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. The sheer size of the crater conjures up images of the massive eruption of the original Mount Batur that occurred tens of thousands years ago.
The volcano is still active today, as Balinese all over the island, who still remember the great eruption of 1917, will testify. It claimed thousands of lives and destroyed hundreds of homes and temples. The older people will tell you this was "the year when the world shook". Other eruptions have taken place since, forcing the local population to be relocated, along with several of their temples including one of the main Bali temples, Pura Ulun Danu. Originally located inside the huge crater, this temple has been relocated to the top of the ridge overlooking it and from there now offers an impressive view of Mount Batur.
Tampak Siring Palace.

Pura Tirta Empul at Tampak Siring
Tampak Siring is built around a scared spring. An inscription dates the spring all the way back to 926AD and there are fine carvings and Garudas on the courtyard buildings.

The temple and its two bathing spots have been used by the Balinese for over a thousand years for good health and prosperity, as the spring water really does have the power to cure! Regular purification ceremonies also take place there.
Tampak Siring artists produce marvellous bone and ivory carvings. Both sites are open daily. By public transport from Ubud, catch a bemo north to Tampaksiring from the junction in Bedulu, which is south-east of Ubud.
A little off the main road in Tampaksiring is Gunung Kawi with its group of large stone memorials cut into cliffs on either side of a picturesque river valley. It is believed to date from the 11th century, one of Bali's most impressive sights.
